Close behind are OCT and fundus-image triage tools that flag likely pathology and help prioritise which patients are seen first. In these narrow, well-validated tasks, AI has moved from novelty to workflow.

Where clinicians stay cautious

Enthusiasm cools for anything approaching a diagnosis or treatment decision. The recurring concerns are consistent:

  • Validation and generalisability — does the model hold up on my patient population and my devices?
  • Liability — who is responsible when the algorithm is wrong?
